At the start of this new year, we joyfully observe Celebrate Life Month, during which we recognize the dignity and worth of every life from conception to natural death. As my wife and I prepare to welcome our first child into the world this coming spring, we are in awe of God’s beautiful design for life. We’ve been able to see firsthand that, whether in the womb or outside of it, “a person’s a person, no matter how small!”
This month, we celebrate the fantastic work of pro-life pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) in Massachusetts. These charitable centers are the frontline outposts of the pro-life movement, working tirelessly to help women and children in need. From options counseling, to free diapers and wipes, to ultrasounds, STI testing, and abortion pill reversal, PRCs offer a wide range of services, all of which are completely free. Each year, they offer over a million dollars’ worth of assistance with no strings attached. It’s no wonder that PRCs report a client satisfaction rating of more than 95%. Sadly, many in our Commonwealth reject the value of life. Although the downfall of Roe v. Wade in 2022 was a momentous victory for the pro-life movement, here in Massachusetts it motivated pro-abortion activists to lash out with unprecedented fury. Their main targets were pro-life PRCs. In 2023, MFI worked hard to defend PRCs from attacks at both the local and state level. When Easthampton and Worcester tried to pass ordinances that would censor the free speech of PRCs, we threatened legal action, ultimately helping to defeat the ordinances. We also helped to create coalitions to testify against bills that would use Massachusetts taxpayer dollars to smear and censor PRCs at the state level. But while we achieved some good victories last year by God’s grace, this year is sure to bring more challenges for life in the Commonwealth.
In 2024, we expect to see a continued push from pro-abortion activists to remove all remaining barriers to abortion, including age limits and conscience protections for pro-life doctors. These radical activists will also keep trying to crack down on pro-life PRCs. Bills like SB 1114 must be defeated this year:
