Maryland sends bathroom bill to defeat for year

The Maryland Senate has ended debate for this year on their version of the “bathroom bill,” leaving gay activists “greatly disappointed.” The Senate voted 27-20 to send the bill back to committee for further study, with advocates saying they will file the bill again next year. The House had approved it two weeks ago, but when it made its way to the Senate floor, a bi-partisan vote of both Republicans (11) and Democrats (16) sent it back to committee. Transgender activist Dana Beyer told reporters, “It’s shocking, because we didn’t expect this.”

Our “Bathroom Bill” has likewise failed to get out of the Judiciary Committee in recent years, and we are working hard to make sure that it remains there again this year. These types of bills are fatally flawed, and directly threaten the safety, privacy and modesty of women and children.
