How appropriate that a major motion picture about religious freedom should be released the same week as the Stand for Religious Freedom Rally!  “When they outlawed freedom – free men became outlaws” is the theme of “For Greater Glory.”
The movie is the true story of the Marxist government of Mexico initiating a vicious persecution of Roman Catholics in 1926, demanding a strict enforcement of anti-religious provisions in the Mexican constitution.
For the next three years, Mexican troops, operating under the orders of the Marxist government leaders and their anti-clerical edicts, sought to eradicate “superstition” and “fanaticism” in the country by desecrating religious objects, burning churches and executing clergy. Eventually, loyal men and women of faith united into an army over 50,000 who fought to defend their religious liberty.
 
Lura and I had an opportunity to view an advanced screening of this moving
film last week. The cinema photography is magnificent as director Dean Wright brings a visual power honed from years as a leading Hollywood effects guru on such blockbusters as TITANIC, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. That, coupled with an action-packed script and an all-star cast led by Andy Garcia and Peter O’Toole, makes for an absolutely first rate, three and one-half star production. No sexual content and no foul language, the movie is rated R for violence — but it is not gory. I believe it is appropriate for mature middle-school aged children and up.
