On Friday, the US House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing on DOMA and the administration’s decision to not defend the law. Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), who chairs the subcommittee, called three witnesses to discuss the largely unprecedented move by the White House: Maggie Gallagher, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage; Rutgers law professor Carlos Ball; and Ed Whelan, president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Whelan testified that Obama’s decision was part of a “broader sabotage of DOMA” that put favoring a powerful political constituency over its legal duty. (CitizenLink)
