Abortion is on the rise in MA. According to numbers recently released by the MA Department of Health, abortions in the Commonwealth doubled between 2023 and 2024. In 2023 24,355 abortions were recorded, followed by 49,450 in 2024. Strikingly, 80% of these were attributed to chemical abortion procedures using the pill, and 62.5% of cases were via telehealth. Massachusetts Citizens For Life notes that this data indicates that the increase in abortions is largely tied to “remote abortion pill sales.

Despite the misleading rhetoric from abortion proponents who promote these pills as safe, this deadly pill not only ends a human life – it is dangerous for the women who take it. Last year, we told you about a study published by the Ethics and Public Policy Center that examined the abortion pill known as Mifepristone. Drawing on all-payer insurance claims from more than 865,000 chemical abortions between 2017 and 2023, the research found that nearly 11% of women experienced serious adverse events, including hemorrhaging, sepsis, infection, or complications requiring surgery, within just 45 days of taking the pill.
That’s over 94,000 women facing severe, often life-threatening complications.
Prescribing the abortion pill to women seeking help during a life-altering event takes advantage of women in a vulnerable context, and abortion pill manufacturers marketing their product as a “safe” option is a lie that costs women their health and their lives.
The state report reveals other troubling trends as well.
In 2024, 73 abortions were performed on girls aged 0-15, and 1,418 abortions were performed on girls aged 16-17. This means in the state of Massachusetts, 1,491 minors received abortions that year. The report does not differentiate the methods of these abortions, but regardless of how they were committed, these numbers are highly concerning. The legal age to consent to sex in Massachusetts is 16, meaning that many girls who obtain abortions under this age will be victims of statutory rape. If a pregnant girl is provided an abortion pill with no adult oversight, not only is her health at risk, but it is very likely that the criminal act that caused her pregnancy will go unreported.
However, one of the bills we’ve been fighting would eliminate this requirement. S.1579, An Act to eliminate barriers and expand abortion access, would allow girls of any age to “consent” to their own abortions without parental knowledge or involvement or even a judge’s oversight. Yet, these bills would remove all protections for them.
This legislation was recently sent to a study order, but just because the momentum to ratify these bills has slowed down does not mean the fight is over.
The increase in abortion should spur us to protect the vulnerable, but right now, our legislators are attempting to doing the opposite. S.1244, An Act enhancing access to abortion care, and H.2370, An Act prioritizing patient access to care, are still active. We urge you to contact your legislators today and ask them to oppose these harmful bills.
Though the numbers from this study are from 2024, it is critical in understanding the breadth of what we are standing against. And, we must note that these are only professionally recorded abortion cases. We can speculate that these numbers will continue to increase, which is why we need your help.
The fight for life is more important now than ever. Your support helps us continue advocating against radical abortion expansion bills, aids our legal efforts on behalf of pro-life pregnancy resource centers, and makes our fight for the sanctity of life possible.
We cannot do this alone. To protect the sanctity of life and the future of our Commonwealth, consider giving a donation today. No matter how much you give, you are taking part in a large-scale movement to preserve the dignity of life from conception through natural death.
We are grateful for your support in this critical work.
