We told you back in June about Mahmoud v. Taylor, the recent Supreme Court case that marks a major victory for religious public school parents. The 6-3 ruling affirmed that schools cannot force children to participate in lessons or read materials that conflict with their family’s religious beliefs – specifically in this case, LGBTQ storybooks. We had been tracking this case for months because we knew that the ruling, for better or worse, would have a major impact here in Massachusetts since many MA schools have adopted the same anti-parental rights posture and deny opt outs for similar lessons.
The Newton Public Schools is one such district. Despite parent pushback, we know that the NPS has made it their habit to tell concerned parents who requested an opt-out “No,” and intentionally embed sexuality and gender identity lessons across all grade levels. Thanks to MFI public records requests and information shared by parents, we have ample documentation of the NPS’s systemic efforts to expose even their youngest students to these sensitive topics, often under the guise of diversity or social justice education. We even have the NPS’s 70-page K-5 Gender Anti-Bias Library, which contains lessons on some of the same books featured in Mahmoud v. Taylor, and a statement that highlights their anti-opt-out position. We published this shocking document, along with significant additional documentation, on the Massachusetts Informed Parents Substack.
We are putting Newton Public Schools, and other MA districts with similar practices, on notice. For many MA parents, this Supreme Court ruling offers hope — and a long-overdue check on school systems that have ignored parental concerns for too long. Mahmoud changes the landscape, and we will be watching to make sure that the rights of religious parents to direct the upbringing of their own children is honored when school starts up again in the fall.
