Beacon Hill Update: What Happened at the Hearings and How You Can Make a Difference

In the last month, three major hearings have taken place on Beacon Hill that impact life, parental rights, and our children’s safety. We notified you in advance, and we are incredibly grateful to every one of you who submitted written testimony or testified in person and virtually. Your voice matters, and it’s making a difference.

One powerful example came during testimony from MFI’s Director of Research and Engagement, Jess Richardson. At Tuesday’s hearing of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development where the “Pornographic Schoolbook Bills” were on the agenda, Jess bravely addressed the disturbing reality of sexually explicit materials in schools and the dangers posed by proposed legislation that would normalize this content. Her testimony sparked immediate pushback from some legislators, revealing just how entrenched and dismissive some are toward parental concerns.

These moments make it clear: if we don’t show up and speak out, the only voices legislators hear are the ones pushing these harmful agendas.

But the fight is far from over.

Lawmakers are still weighing these proposals, and it is critical that we continue to speak up for the family in the Commonwealth. Below is a summary of the key bills heard in recent hearings, grouped by issue, and how you can take immediate action to support or oppose them.

Visit our Take Action page and contact your legislators about each of these bills. Your voice can help turn the tide.

EDUCATION

SUPPORT: H.551, An Act relative to parental rights in education
This bill is a crucial step toward restoring parental rights in public schools. It ensures that parents are fully informed and involved in significant decisions affecting their child’s education, health, and well-being.

By requiring transparency, parental consent, and accountability, H.551 reaffirms that parents, not schools, are the primary decision-makers for their children.

OPPOSE: S. 316 An Act to promote social-emotional learning
While it may sound harmless, this bill embeds ideological content into school curricula and teacher training. It risks diverting focus from core academic subjects and may serve as a vehicle for promoting progressive social agendas without parental input.

OPPOSE: H.3594/S.2328 and H.3598 – “Pornographic Schoolbook Bills”
These bills would make it nearly impossible for school committees to remove sexually explicit content from public school libraries. Cloaked in language about “free expression” and “preventing book bans,” these proposals strip parents and their elected representatives of their right to protect children from age-inappropriate material.

Parents deserve a voice in their child’s education. Tell lawmakers to support H.551 and reject bills that push explicit content and ideology into classrooms.

LIFE

SUPPORT these life-affirming bills:

These bills defend the dignity of human life, protect vulnerable unborn children, and support ethical use of taxpayer dollars. Massachusetts can, and should, be a place where life is cherished. These bills would help accomplish that.

OPPOSE these Radical Abortion Expansion Bills:

These proposals, backed by groups like Planned Parenthood, aim to strip away every remaining protection for unborn babies and their mothers. They’re part of a dangerous push to make Massachusetts one of the most extreme abortion states in the country.

Help us stop this radical abortion agenda. Support the pro-life bills and oppose dangerous expansion efforts by taking action today!

SEXUALITY

OPPOSE: H.2467 An Act to study the decriminalization of sex work
Don’t be fooled by the “study” label. This bill is a gateway to normalizing prostitution. It risks undermining the fight against human trafficking and legitimizing the exploitation of women and children in Massachusetts.

Our state should be protecting people from exploitation, not promoting it. Make your voice heard today!

You can make a difference! From defending parental rights to protecting life and opposing the normalization of sexual exploitation, these bills reflect critical turning points for our Commonwealth.
