We’re thrilled to share a recent win for religious freedom in Massachusetts public education!
Through the Massachusetts Informed Parents (MIP) Facebook group, MFI’s grassroots initiative that equips parents to protect their children in education, a father whose child attends a charter school in Tyngsborough reached out seeking advice on how to respond when his son’s request to start a student-led “Jesus Club” was denied by the school. Although the school hosts a “free period” during the day that allows various student-led extracurricular clubs, it refused to permit a Christian club. MIP encouraged him to contact MFI’s legal arm, the Massachusetts Liberty Legal Center (MLLC), for legal support and guidance to challenge this decision. MLLC equipped the concerned father with case law confirming that under federal law, if a public school permits student-led clubs of any kind, it cannot discriminate against faith-based ones. With this legal backing, the father engaged in thoughtful dialogue with the school administration. After some back-and-forth, the school reversed course and approved the Jesus Club for the next school year, a major victory for religious liberty and student expression!
This victory highlights how MFI’s strategic defense of constitutional rights through both the MIP and MLLC initiatives is empowering more Bay State families to stand up when their fundamental liberties are threatened. And this story perfectly illustrates exactly why MFI exists: to equip families and advocate for truth and freedom in the public square. Thanks to your support, students across Massachusetts are being empowered to live out their faith boldly, even in public schools.
