In 2012, Massachusetts voters rejected physician-assisted suicide, and in 2022, the MA Supreme Court refused to recognize a constitutional right to it. Despite this, the pro-suicide lobby is pushing HB2505/SB1486 to legalize assisted suicide.
We oppose this bill for these reasons:
- Physician-assisted suicide invites abuse and creates a slippery slope toward devaluing life, putting the most vulnerable at risk, that’s why the National Council on Disability opposes it.
- Patients are offered assisted suicide instead of life-saving treatment, for example women with eating disorders.
- Sometimes doctors misdiagnose patients causing them to believe they have a terminal illness, and that assisted suicide would alleviate prolonged suffering.
- Mental health conditions are ignored and doctors help depressed patients take their own lives.
Although the previous version of this bill required assisted suicide data to be made publicly available, including how many people have died by PAS and whether they had a disability, the new version of this bill eliminates that transparency by stating that such data is not a public record. One has to ask, what are the proponents of this bill trying to hide?
Physician-assisted suicide is never necessary and always ends a unique and valuable human life.
