What President Trump’s Executive Order on Gender Policy Means for MA

Mere hours after taking office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” This order mandates that the federal government recognize only two sexes, male and female. While the order does not—and legally cannot—change state laws, at the federal level, the order introduces significant changes in four key areas:

  1. Definition of Sex: The federal government now defines sex as an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female, determined at conception.
  2. Federal Documentation: All federal identification documents, such as passports and visas, must reflect an individual’s biological sex, effectively eliminating options for non-binary or “X” gender markers.
  3. Policy Revisions: Federal agencies are directed to revise policies to align with the binary definition of biological sex, rescinding previous guidance that recognized “gender identity.”  This could prove very significant for the interpretation of federal laws like Title IX, which protects equal opportunities for women and girls in education.
  4.  Elimination of DEI Programs: The order terminates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs within the federal government. Agencies are directed to phase out DEI-related practices and ensure that employment and promotion are based solely on individual capability and achievement.

While this order does not affect state laws like those in Massachusetts, it represents a broader cultural shift. For individuals like student Liam Morrison, who have been persecuted for saying exactly what this order proclaims, this development serves as validation. It underscores the truth that there are only two genders—a perspective now reflected in federal policy.

Time will tell what effect this order and other future actions may have in areas like girls’ sports, public bathrooms, and gender ideology in schools. But this swift first action from President Trump to undercut gender confusion at the federal level is certainly a cause for optimism.
