The legalization of dangerous drugs was once again on the ballot this November. However, Massachusetts voters rejected this referendum by a margin of 57% to 43%.
If passed, Question 4 would have:
- Legalized the use of 5 powerful and dangerous psychedelic drugs: psilocybin, psilocyn, dimethyltryptamine, mescaline, and ibogaine.
- Legalized for-profit psychedelic facilities with no ability for towns to ban these facilities.
- Allowed psychedelics to be grown at home and given away to others, effectively creating a black market.
These drugs have been documented to cause psychosis, mania, and other mental health issues that can be long-lasting. That’s why Question 4 has been deemed by many medical experts, including the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, as “reckless, irresponsible, and dangerous to the public.” They state that such potent hallucinogenic drugs should only be given, if at all, by prescription and with medical supervision. The use of these drugs for medical purposes is still very much in the experimental stage and legalizing them has the potential to cause major harm to Massachusetts communities.
MFI stands in steadfast opposition to the legalization of dangerous drugs, which hurt children and destroy families. We are grateful that the citizens of MA voted to reject this harmful referendum.
