“60 Minutes” exposes the predatory nature of slot machines

Former state Senator Susan Tucker (D-Andover) and Les Bernal, Executive Director of the Stop Predatory Gambling Foundation, were both featured on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” this past Sunday as the news magazine exposed the gambling industry.

“Their knowledge and experience with the gambling industry is unsurpassed,” says Kathleen Conley Norbut, director of United to Stop Slots in Massachusetts. “We are fortunate that some of our peers are still courageous enough to speak truth about the perverted partnership that has emerged with government and the gambling industry.”

Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes” reports on the proliferation of gambling to 38 states and its main attraction, the slot machine, newer versions of which some scientists believe addicts their players. You can watch the entire segment titled “Slot Machines: The Big Gamble” here:

“Those who knowingly endorse a predatory industry and products that addict its own citizens for profit are using a frame of reference that is synonymous with that of a corrupt dealer in human flesh,” said Norbut.

MFI will work with our allies on this issue to ensure that lawmakers on Beacon Hill have an opportunity to watch this program.
