Commonwealth Update - 7.20.10
Inside this issue

Montana considers radical sex education curriculum

Montana parents are fighting back against a radical new sex education curriculum that is being considered by the Helena school district. The new lessons would teach kindergarteners the names of male and female sex organs. First graders would begin to learn about homosexuality by being taught “human beings can love people of the same gender and people of another gender.”

Second graders would be taught not to use anti-gay slurs like “homo,” “fag,” and “queer”—even if the lesson is the first time they have heard those words. But the most outrageous material is left for fifth graders, when children are taught that sexual intercourse includes “vaginal, oral, or anal penetration.” This goes even beyond what SIECUS and Planned Parenthood recommend in their “Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education.”

When the curriculum was first unveiled in June, concerned parents immediately expressed their shock. They were finally given the opportunity on July 13 to express their outrage to the school system’s Board of Trustees. More than 300 people turned out, with around three-quarter opposed. Board members will vote on the curriculum in August.

This is a warning to parents in Massachusetts about what is possible. Though the Comprehensive Health Frameworks bill remains bottled up in committee, local school districts are left to create their own programs. SEICUS and Planned Parenthood are taking advantage of this situation by going directly to individual school districts and playing off the town’s financial restraints by offering their radical curriculums free-of-charge.

If you have children in public school in Massachusetts, always be aware of what is being taught in their classrooms. Inquire at the beginning of school year about sexuality education, monitor the published agendas of school committee meetings, and consider attending school committee meetings, especially if there is to be a hearing or vote on a controversial issue.  Being proactive will help prevent the corruption of your child (and others), and also allow you to better protect your rights as a parent.

Senate Judiciary Committee approves Elena Kagan's nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to approve Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court. The 13-6 vote sends Kagan's nomination to the full Senate, where a vote could take place as early as next week to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.

Despite your calls, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina was the lone Republican to support her nomination, joining panel Democrats in supporting President Barack Obama's second Supreme Court nominee.

It is imperitive that Senator Scott Brown votes against Kagan. He voted to oppose the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and has come out against the DISCLOSE Act. But his vote on the Kagan nomination is critical. Please call him at 202-224-4543 or 617-565-3170. Her judicial philosophy is wrong for the court. Her values and political beliefs are contrary to ours and the majority of Americans. She is also simply unqualified, having never served as a judge.

Will SCOTUS let DC vote on marriage?

Last Thursday, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals joined the D.C. Superior Court in calling natural marriage “discriminatory” and arguing that, as such, voters should not have the opportunity to protect it. A block of five judges wrote, "Because appellants' proposed initiative would authorize, or have the effect of authorizing, discrimination on the basis prohibited by the Human Rights Act, it was not a proper subject of initiative." The case turned more on arcane details of D.C. law than it did on the merits of same-sex "marriage."

Until the District gives its people a voice, Bishop Harry Jackson's team is determined to bring the issue to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, the next--and final stop--in preserving the principle of self-governance that this city is supposed to symbolize. Do what you can to help Stand for Marriage and Alliance Defense Fund fight this agenda--starting with prayer for their team.

Get your marching orders on FRC's Special Military Webcast

From the states, to international borders, and now the military, the sky's the limit for the liberal agenda of abortion and homosexuality. After stuffing millions of dollars into the health care bill for abortion, the President (despite his token Executive Order that there is to be no public funding of abortion) and his party are drafting the military into their assault on the unborn. Last month the Senate Armed Services Committee, after stuffing the repeal of the military ban on homosexuality as an amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill,  voted15-12 on another amendment to overturn the ban on abortion in military installations--both foreign and domestic. If they were hoping for broad bipartisan support, the Committee is about to be disappointed. Led by Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) and Gene Taylor (D-Miss.), a whopping 180 members of Congress signed a letter to House and Senate leadership urging them to strip the abortion language from the bill. "DoD medical facilities should remain focused on providing the best possible care for our military service members and their families, not providing abortion on demand," they write.

This is just one in a long line of anti-family assaults hidden in the Defense Appropriations  Bill. FRC, together with some distinguished guests from across the military and political spectrum, will be tackling these issues TONIGHT (Tuesday, July 20) in a webcast, "Mission Compromised." Confirmed speakers include General John Sheehan (USMC, Ret.), Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Rep. Todd Akin, Frank Gaffney of Center for Security Policy, Austin Nimocks of ADF, Bryan Fischer of AFA, Dr. Robert Labutta (U.S. Army, Ret.), and FRC experts Cathy Ruse and Jeanne Monahan. Don't miss this important event, which kicks off TONIGHT at 8:30 p.m. (ET). For more details on the webcast and how you can get involved, click here.

In ironic statement, Richard Tisei says "Let the people vote!"

Rejecting calls for a constitutional amendment and the idea of putting the issue before voters, the state Senate voted 28-10 on Thursday evening to pass legislation aimed at awarding the U.S. presidency to the winner of the national popular vote. The bill will take effect if states collectively representing 270 electoral votes approve the change.

In an ironic moment, Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei advocated for a non-binding ballot question this fall and asked his colleagues, “…why not let the people vote?” Sen. Tisei, who is openly homosexual and currently running for lieutenant governor as a Republican, was a strident and vocal opponent of the Marriage Amendment that the Legislature killed in 2007.

While I agree with Richard Tisei that this important change to our electoral process should at least be put to the people as a non-binding ballot question if not a constitutional amendment, I find it disingenuous that he is calling for his colleagues to “let the people vote” when he actively prevented the people from voting on marriage.
